TANCDA

WE ARE FOCUSED ON ADDRESSING THE GROWING BURDEN OF NON-COMMUNICABLE DISEASES (NCDS) IN TANZANIA

To raise awareness of NCDs, promote prevention measures, and advocate for policies that support the effective management and control of NCDs in Tanzania.

TANCDA was honored to attend the session co-hosted by the Government of Tanzania and the Government of Denmark at the Marriott Marquis, New York.

We are proud that the Call to Action coming out of this session reflects the very priorities championed by the Alliance ; prevention, equity, integration, people centered and leaving no one behind in the NCD response. 🇹🇿🤝🇩🇰

Together, we move closer to a healthier and fairer world.

Today, TANCDA proudly organized the Time to Lead Walkathon at Coco Beach starting at 6:00am 🏃‍♂️🚶‍♀️. The event was graced by the Assistant Director for NCDs from the Ministry of Health, PORALG, TAMSA members, Wasafi Jogging Club, WNCDI, students & teachers from teachers from Zanaki Secondary, teach people living with NCDs and community members of the wider community.

Together, we walked for awareness, action, and leadership in the fight against NCDs — showing that when we unite, we can make a healthier Tanzania possible

On 4th September 2025, the focus shifted to the voices and lived experiences of People Living with NCDs (PLWNCDs). Patients openly highlighted challenges such as frequent medicine stock-outs, high treatment costs, limited insurance coverage, stigma, and long travel distances to access care. Despite these barriers, participants shared stories of resilience, including running small businesses in soap making, honey production, and local food sales to sustain their treatment needs, initiatives that TANCDA has supported through entrepreneurship training. The day concluded with consensus on four national advocacy priorities: making NCD medicines and diagnostics more affordable, expanding insurance coverage to include NCD services, increasing community awareness and education, and ensuring screening tools are available in all health facilities. These priorities will shape Tanzania’s unified position at the upcoming UNHLM on NCDs.

On 3rd September 2025, the Tanzania NCD Alliance (TANCDA), in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, WHO, and civil society partners, hosted a stakeholder dialogue at Luther House in Dar es Salaam to prepare the country’s position ahead of the upcoming United Nations High-Level Meeting (UNHLM) on Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs). The meeting gathered 35 participants from government, law associations, patient groups, and development partners to review Tanzania’s progress in addressing NCDs. Discussions emphasized the need for prevention, early detection, and quality response, as well as innovative financing, stronger primary health care, and improved multisectoral collaboration. Stakeholders identified seven priority intervention areas: prevention, PHC strengthening and early detection, sustainable financing, governance and coordination, service integration, empowerment of people living with NCDs, and improved data, HMIS, and research systems.

Today’s Highlight Dialogue. Awareness. Action. We hosted a powerful engagement between people living with NCDs and media representatives to explore gaps in NCD reporting and strengthen collaboration. This meeting aimed to amplify the voices of those affected and build a more informed and responsible media narrative around non-communicable diseases. Together, we’re shifting the conversation from silence to solutions!

One-Day Refresher Training on Community-Led Monitoring (CLM) for NCDs
Community-Led Monitoring (CLM) is an inclusive and participatory approach that allows communities to gather and use data to monitor health services and advocate for improvements. It empowers people directly affected by NCDs to identify service delivery gaps, provide feedback, and hold the health system accountable.
TANCDA has been implementing CLM with the aim of enhancing community voice and engagement in NCD response. As part of this effort, TANCDA organised a one-day refresher training session in Dar es Salaam to equip people with lived experience and community health workers with updated skills, tools, and knowledge needed for effective monitoring, advocacy, and prevention.
Main objective
To strengthen the capacity of people living with NCDs and community health workers to actively participate in community-led monitoring, advocate for improved services, and contribute to early detection and prevention of NCDs.

TANCDA Engages Artists in NCD Awareness Campaign

TANCDA organized a collaborative meeting aimed at continuing to educate artists about Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs). A variety of artists from the music, drama, and comedy industries attended the session and were trained on how to effectively use their platforms to deliver educational messages about NCDs to their audiences.

The artists were equipped with key knowledge on promoting physical activity, the importance of proper nutrition, and discouraging the use of harmful substances such as alcohol, cigarettes, shisha, and tobacco products.

This initiative underscores the role of creatives as powerful influencers in shaping public behavior and advancing health education in the fight against NCDs.

Media Meeting in Zanzibar

As part of efforts to strengthen the fight against Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), a strategic media meeting was held in Zanzibar. The gathering brought together over 30 journalists from various media outlets across the region.

The purpose of this meeting was to enhance NCD messaging, share important updates on current initiatives, and agree on collaborative strategies for raising public awareness. By equipping media representatives with accurate and relevant information, the session aimed to improve the quality and consistency of NCD-related reporting.

Participants engaged in interactive discussions on how to effectively use radio, television, newspaper, and digital platforms to communicate health messages that promote prevention, early detection, and control of NCDs. The training also provided journalists with practical tools and resources to support evidence-based storytelling and impactful media coverage.

This initiative marked a significant step forward in building strong partnerships between health stakeholders and the media, ensuring that the message of healthy living reaches all corners of the community.

On April 22, 2025, TANCDA convened a high-level Advocacy Group Meeting, bringing together key stakeholders committed to advancing health equity in Tanzania. This strategic gathering focused on reviewing advocacy milestones, sharing key achievements, and aligning on the next steps to influence health laws and policies that support the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Discussions emphasized the urgent need to move beyond awareness toward legally backed, enforceable policies that protect communities, especially the most vulnerable, from preventable diseases. With strong voices in the room, from civil society, media, faith leaders, and the health sector, the meeting reinforced the importance of policy-driven advocacy as a path toward lasting, equitable health outcomes in Tanzania.
